Where your competition is in California
The largest concentrations of septic companies in our California data are in Fresno, Riverside, Salinas, Bakersfield, Chico, San Bernardino, Modesto and Santa Rosa. Competition for the map pack is heaviest there, and so is the reward: the same review count that dominates a small town is invisible in Fresno.
The map pack in California
The map pack is a three-slot race, and in California it is won by review count and recency far more than by rating: 66.3% of California septic companies are already at 4.5 stars or better, so stars do not separate anyone. The 75th percentile is 29 reviews and the 90th is 65. Those are the numbers to plan around, not the median.
The website gap in California
31.1% of California septic companies list no website on their Google profile, about as many than the national 32.2%. Nationally, septic companies with a website have a median of 20 reviews against 5 without. A five-page site with tap-to-call and a page per service is the cheapest gap to close.
Hours and after-hours calls
26.8% of California septic companies list themselves as open 24 hours. If you take after-hours calls, say so in your profile hours, because Google shows "Closed" in red on a profile that says it is closed. If you do not, list real hours and let missed-call text-back cover the gap, so the caller gets a reply instead of dialing the next name.
How California compares
Of the 46 states in our data, California ranks 7th for the number of septic companies, 39th for median review count, and 32nd for the share with no website, so a website alone will not set you apart here. The review bar is lower than in most of the country, so a few months of asking every customer moves you up fast.
| State | Listed | Median reviews | No site |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | 228 | 8.5 | 31.1% |
| Alaska | 31 | 24 | 32.3% |
| Oregon | 85 | 18 | 23.5% |
| Washington | 237 | 15 | 26.6% |
What to do first in California
- Put up a real website if you are in the 31.1% without one. Service pages, city pages for Fresno, Riverside, Salinas, tap-to-call on every screen.
- Set a review velocity. One review per job day, asked at the door, moves a 8.5-review shop past the California 75th percentile (29) within a year. The guides have the scripts.
- Finish the Google profile: primary category, every service you offer, real job photos, and hours that match reality. It is free and it is where California customers decide.
- Turn on missed-call text-back. Run the calculator with your own numbers to see what unanswered calls cost.
- Then, and only then, spend on ads. Pointed at a profile with 8.5 reviews and no website, ads pay for your competitor's education. Pointed at a finished profile, they work.
